Big 12 Fantasy Outlook for Week 9

Welcome to the world of Big 12 football from a fantasy perspective.  We will breakdown the weekend of Big 12 games as if we’re preparing to play fantasy football only using Big 12 players.

START OF THE WEEK

Roy Helu, JR – RB, Nebraska – There were two other players we considered for this top spot, but w/ the devastating loss to Iowa State that Nebraska is coming off of, the perfect cure is the Baylor rush defense.  Baylor is at the bottom of the Big 12 barrel in rushing yards allowed, and we expect Helu to have a monster game as NU will just simply try to overpower the hapless Bears.

Others – Jerrod Johnson, QB- Texas A&M; a Texas Tech QB; Todd Reesing, QB- KU

QUARTERBACKS – We’ll start one QB on our Big 12 fantasy team, but we’ll give you two other options as well:

Jerrod Johnson, Texas A&M – At home after a huge win, we don’t expect a letdown this week from the Big 12’s total offense leader.
Todd Reesing, KU – After struggling the last two weeks, we expect a shootout in Lubbock that should lead to big stats for both QB’s in this game.
Texas Tech QB – See Todd Reesing’s write-up, and it doesn’t matter who the QB is.

Sleeper Alert – Landry Jones, OU – The K-State defense has been on fire the last two weeks causing 1o sacks, but they gave up over 1 million yards passing to Texas Tech a few weeks back.  On the road in Norman where no one comes out alive, it’s quite possible Landry puts up some big numbers.

Bust Alert – Colt McCoy, Texas – Despite Mac Brown’s dominance over OSU, they have struggled to come from behind the past few games.  This game could once again be a nail biter, and Colt showed signs of being human against OU so w/ this game being on the road there is the potential to struggle.

RUNNING BACKS – we’ll go on the premise that our fantasy team will start 2 RB’s, so we predict them in this order:

Roy Helu, JR., Nebraska– Should completely dominate a demoralized Baylor Bears team
Cyrus Gray, Texas A&M – Look for A&M to follow up on their impressive performance against Tech w/ a strong ground game against the 9th ranked rushing defense in the Big 12.
Alexander Robinson, Iowa St. – The former Big 12 rushing leader should be back in action this week, and if he’s truly fully recovered from his groin injury he should have a great day.
Toben Opurum, KU – The freshman is a TD machine, and Tech will give up some rushing yards and TD’s

Bust Alert – Daniel Thomas, KSU – This potential newcomer of the year will run into the toughest defense he’s faced all year.  He must have success for K-State to have a chance, but he should find the sledding rough.

WIDE RECEIVERS / TIGHT END

Let’s just start 3 of the WR’s in the KU vs. Texas Tech game and call it good.  For good measure we will also throw in Jordan Shipley to go along with Desmond Briscoe, Kerry Meier and Detron Lewis of Texas Tech.

DEFENSE / SPECIAL TEAMS

Oklahoma – While K-State’s offense has shown signs of improvement, they haven’t seen a defense like this yet.

Nebraska – Not much more to say here, they’re playing Baylor.

Bust Alert – Texas; We would not recommend starting Texas as your defense this week.  OSU has major firepower, and they’re playing at home.

Sleeper Alert – We’re going to go way out on a limb here and say K-State.  They have been a take away and sack machine over the past few games, and we believe they will force Landry Jones into a couple of bad plays.  They might give up some yards and points, but there is potential for big plays from Brandon Banks on special teams, interceptions from Safety Tysyn Hartman, as well as w/ the pass rush from Jeffrey Fitzgerald.
