We continue our quest to help parents prepare their children for a great upcoming summer camp season. Whether it’s to one of our Mega Football Camps, or even a camp sponsored by someone else, these tips will help make your child’s camp experience even better. Of course, we’re a little biased about our own camps so this will have a spin towards our full-contact football camps, but pieces of all the tips can be used for other camp activities your child participates in. If you missed the first part of this series, “Eat and drink properly”, you can find it HERE. As for the second tip, it’s another simple, but very effective way to have a successful camp:
Tip #2 – Make sure your child knows how and why to get a hold of you
This sounds simple, but you’d be surprised how many times our Camp Directors and coaches give up their cell phones during the week of camp so kids can call their parents … of course, they don’t mind because they are there for the kids, but have a plan leading up to camp about how and when your kids can reach you. One other thing parents, don’t get your feelings hurt when they call you the first night and then you never hear from them again! 10 years ago when we first started the JJD Sports Mega Football Camp and cell phones weren’t as prevalent as they are today, the line to use the phone provided by the college would reach 20-30 deep in the evenings. By the second night it would be 2-3 kids, and by the third night there was no one … that’s just how it goes when the kids are having fun!
So parents, while a lot of camps will prohibit the use of cell phones during the week of camp, we don’t. In fact, if your son has one, just make sure he knows how to get your number and devise a plan on when and why he should be calling you; and don’t get your feelings hurt if the calls stop two days into camp! And of course, if they ever need to get a hold of you and they don’t have a phone, our coaches and Camp Directors will always be happy to assist. Stay tuned for tip #3!
